Most agree that humor in the workplace can have a positive impact. But not all humor is good humor. The challenge: how to interject appropriate humor and fun into our serious jobs without hurting others or seriously undermining the company. When appropriate, humor can work for you to use.

Humor has the power to make people feel special. If you include people in fun it simultaneously improves morale, reduces stress and facilitates team building. With the spread of telecommuting and workgroups scattered geographically, the challenge is the promotion of labor relations, real bond and camaraderie building. At a San Francisco Bay Area company a workgroup staged an elaborate Remote Baby Shower. The expectant mother, the out-of-state, called in a pre-specified telephone conference with its working group. When they did that. . . Surprise! Everyone was having a party in her honor. It has digital photos of a decorated conference room and each other, and by e-mail sound files with well wishes. Everyone in the good cheer shared. This creative use of technology brought employees bring closer together, figuratively if not literally.

Jobs are full of opportunities to use humor for the benefit of all. Milestones are a natural place to employ humor. Dress like the recipient as a tribute during a surprise party. Other celebrations of anniversaries, project completions or similar services are perfect ways to use humor. Even surviving certain projects is cause for celebration and fun.
Holidays are another natural time to employ humor. Halloween is a time for contests to see who can best decorate conference rooms, for other companies the anniversary of their founding is cause for celebration. are Silly speeches, skits and parodies abound.

Staging awards is a great way to have fun, recognize each other and revel in the common work experience. Whether imitating the categories found at the Oscars, Emmys and Tonys, or are derivative, esprit de corps rises when the team laughs at themselves and each other. On closer inspection, these were true-to-life replicas of tickets whimsical offenses of significance to the recipient. The departmental joker’s ticket cited him for “excessive use of farce” and the hard charging corporate counsel’s infraction charged him with “failure to yield.” Of course the initiator of the gag is quoted later for impersonating an officer. Everyone laughed at the spoof once knew that it was a joke. was Judge Judy’s signature at the bottom of the ticket it away.

A rapidly growing company does not have enough office space for full cabin for its new employees. had an unfortunate car rental classified’s a huge rod in their midst. To her credit she never complained. Co-workers felt for her. One night they hit the streets, collect different aircraft from telegraph poles in their neighborhood. The next day was when the new rent their cabin, the offending pole now reached with messages about missing pets covered, tenants seeking apartments, cheap movers for hire and even local GRE study groups. Not only the staff know their employees felt their frustration, it bonded them as well as they moved together to the one to help her.

In focusing humor consider targeting yourself. Everyone has a different idea of what is funny and what is not. Many well-intentioned prank or joke has backfired.
